Bread and butter pudding is traditionally a British dessert, made with slices of buttered bread, scattered with raisins and covered in an egg custard. However, we’ve decided to flip this classic dessert on its head and create a savoury version – perfect for a weeknight tea or an easy way to an impress a loved one. With layers of garlic buttered bread, grated cheese, ham and chutney, all covered in a creamy sauce, alongside slices of Baker Street’s Brown Sliced Loaf, it’s a tasty meal that won’t disappoint.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices Baker Street Sliced Brown Loaf
  • 30g butter
  • 1 tsp garlic puree
  • 1 tbsp caramelised onion chutney
  • 100g grated cheese
  • 100g sliced ham
  • 200ml whole milk
  • 200ml double cream
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • Salt and pepper

Steps

  1. Melt the butter in a small pan or microwave then mix in the garlic puree. Butter one side of the bread slices with the garlic butter and cut into triangles
  2. Add half of the sliced loaf triangles to a greased ovenproof dish and top with a little caramelised onion chutney, grated cheese and sliced ham. Repeat this again to layer up the bread in the dish
  3. In a jug, mix the milk, cream, eggs, mustard, salt and pepper and slowly pour over the bread ensuring it soaks up the mixture
  4. Preheat the oven to 200°C / 180°C Fan / Gas Mark 6 whilst leaving the Savoury Bread and Butter Pudding to soak for at least 15 minutes
  5. Bake the pudding in the oven and cook for 25-30 minutes. Leave to cool for 5 minutes before serving with a side of greens of your choice

Enjoy!
